| A diffuse envelope of gas surrounding the nucleus of a comet. The coma consists of dust together with neutral and ionized gas molecules and radicals. Typically, it reaches its maximum size of up to a million kilometres across when the comet has just passed perihelion in its orbit around the Sun. |
